How You Live Impacts Others

Psalms 69:5-6 O God, Thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from Thee. Let not them that wait on Thee, O Lord God of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek Thee be confounded for my sake.

Read Psalms 69:1-36. God knows all our failings. All things, wrote the writer to the Hebrews, are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do (Heb. 4:13).

People who know us are aware of our failings also! And our failings affect them in two ways. First, those who are waiting on God, walking closely with Him and seeking to obey Him, are ashamed when they see us doing or saying something that does not square with His Word. It is not that they resent us, but that they are embarrassed to have the world see Christians living in an unchristian manner. What the psalmist really was saying was, Lord, don’t let me embarrass any of Your saints! Second, our failings confuse people who are really trying to understand the Gospel and experience God’s grace. How often we have heard someone say, I thought I knew what God’s will was in this matter, but I’m confused. So the psalmist in essence prayed: Lord, don’t let either some foolish word or action or some downright sin on my part confuse a person who is really seeking You!

Immediately after saying that God knows all about us, the Bible reminds us that we have a Great High Priest, our Lord Jesus Christ, who has been tested as we have and who knows how we feel. The answer to human failings is to run to the throne of grace for mercy and help. God writes finis over our failings when they are covered by Christ’s righteousness! Neither believers nor unbelievers will ever be embarrassed or confused about you if they know that you are honest about your failings and doing something constructive about them through God’s transforming grace.
